Your Istanbul recommendations

Based on what you are looking for, here are the best areas to explore.

How to explore Istanbul like a local

Istanbul rewards wandering. The neighborhoods that feel most alive are rarely the ones in every guidebook. The city has two distinct characters depending on which side of the Bosphorus you are on, and even within each side the shift from one neighborhood to the next can be dramatic. Sultanahmet and Yeldeğirmeni are both Istanbul, but they feel like different cities.

The single best advice for exploring the city is to take the ferry. The Bosphorus crossing from Karaköy or Eminönü to Kadıköy or Üsküdar takes about 20 minutes and costs the same as a bus ride. Do it at golden hour if you can.

Most neighborhoods are best explored on foot once you arrive. Istanbul is hilly in places but the walking is almost always worth it. Cihangir's steep streets, Balat's painted stairs, Bebek's waterfront promenade -- none of these translate from a vehicle.
