Vibe and character

Moda is the quieter, more residential and more charming pocket within the broader Kadıköy county. It sits on a small peninsula with sea on two sides, and the seafront promenade running along its coast is one of the best Sunday morning walks in Istanbul. The streets are leafy and genuinely beautiful in places, lined with good cafes and local restaurants that serve a predominantly Turkish middle-class crowd.

Moda has a devoted following among expats who have lived in Istanbul long enough to find the city's energy occasionally overwhelming and who want a base from which to engage with the city on their own terms. It is slower and more local in character than Kadıköy center, and the seafront creates a sense of space that is rare in Istanbul.

Who lives there

Moda tends to attract expats who have been in Istanbul for a while and have deliberately chosen it over more obvious options. Writers, academics, architects, and people who work independently or remotely are well represented. The Turkish population is educated, professional and largely middle-class. The neighborhood has a strong sense of community and regular local events around the park and promenade area.

Best streets and areas within it

Moda Caddesi is the main street, lined with cafes and bakeries. The streets between it and the seafront promenade are the most desirable, combining proximity to the water with easy access to daily conveniences. The small harbor at the southern tip of the peninsula is one of the most pleasant spots in the neighborhood. The streets further inland become more standard residential but are still well-maintained and pleasant.
