Turkey is larger than most people expect. The country spans nearly 1,600 kilometers from west to east, which means that destinations like Van or Hatay are genuinely distant from Istanbul -- more comparable to a flight from London to Warsaw than a day trip. Plan accordingly.
Domestic flights in Turkey are excellent value and frequent. Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AnadoluJet connect Istanbul to almost every major city, often for under 1,000 TL if booked a few weeks ahead. For coastal destinations in summer, booking early is essential as prices spike dramatically.
Long-distance buses (otobüs) are a genuinely good option for journeys up to about 8 hours. Companies like Flixbus, Metro Turizm and Pamukkale Turizm run comfortable overnight coaches with reserved seats, refreshments and air conditioning. For many western Aegean destinations this is actually more convenient than flying once you factor in airport time.
Driving gives you the most freedom, especially for the Aegean coast, Cappadocia and the Black Sea. Roads are generally good and well-signposted. The coastal roads between Bodrum, Marmaris, Datça and Kaş are among the most beautiful drives in the country.
