Vibe and character

Etiler and Levent form the prosperous upper European corridor between the Bosphorus villages and the main business district. Levent is where Istanbul's corporate headquarters are concentrated: large Turkish conglomerates, international banks and multinational offices are clustered here in towers visible from much of the European side. Etiler, immediately to the west, is more residential and known for its upscale restaurants, bars and the Akmerkez shopping mall.

The area has a distinctly corporate and affluent atmosphere. The streets are wide and the buildings modern. It lacks the historical character and street-level energy of Beşiktaş or Cihangir, but it compensates with space, reliability and convenience for people whose working life centers on the business district.

Who lives there

Etiler and Levent attract corporate expats, finance professionals and families who need proximity to international schools in the area. Many residents are on structured relocation packages. The Turkish population here is predominantly upper-middle-class and professional. It is one of the more socially homogeneous areas on this list, which some people find reassuring and others find limiting.

Best streets and areas within it

Etiler's residential streets are generally well-maintained and pleasant. The area around Akmerkez has the best retail and dining options. In Levent, the streets between the metro and the business towers are purely commercial; the residential pockets further west are quieter and more appealing. The road north from Levent toward Bebek passes through some of the most attractive and expensive residential areas in the city.
