Vibe and character
Nişantaşı is the most polished neighborhood in Istanbul. Wide, tree-lined boulevards, European-style facades, designer boutiques and excellent restaurants give it a character more reminiscent of Paris's 16th arrondissement or Milan's Brera than most of Istanbul. It is calm by the city's standards, notably well-maintained and conspicuously wealthy. The atmosphere is restrained and international without being either touristy or particularly local.
For some expats this is exactly what they want: a place where the city does not impose itself too forcefully, where everything works reliably and where the restaurant at the end of the street will be good. For others it can feel a little lifeless compared to the energy of Beşiktaş or Kadıköy. This is a neighborhood that rewards people who know what they are looking for rather than those still figuring out what Istanbul is.
Who lives there
Nişantaşı has the highest concentration of corporate expats on package deals of any neighborhood on this list. It suits people who are in Istanbul for a defined assignment, who need a comfortable base that functions reliably and who may not be looking to immerse deeply in Turkish street life. Diplomats, senior finance and consulting professionals and international executives make up a significant share of the expat population. There is also a large and very affluent Turkish professional and upper-middle-class community.
Best streets and areas within it
Valikonağı Caddesi and Teşvikiye Caddesi are the two main shopping and dining streets, both excellent. The residential streets branching off these are quieter and more charming. Teşvikiye, the area immediately south of Nişantaşı proper, is slightly more residential and slightly less expensive while sharing the same general character. The streets around Macka Park offer some of the better value apartments in the area with green space nearby.
