Vibe and character
Şişli is a large and varied district that resists easy characterization. It encompasses everything from the dense commercial center of Mecidiyeköy, where several major highways and metro lines converge, to quieter residential pockets near Nişantaşı that feel considerably more pleasant. It is not particularly atmospheric or charming as a whole, but it is exceptionally practical: central, well-connected and offering a wide range of apartment types at prices that are generally lower than neighboring Nişantaşı.
For many expats, particularly those arriving for the first time or those who prioritize budget and logistics over neighborhood character, Şişli represents a sensible base from which to understand the city before deciding where to settle long-term. Some people stay permanently; others use it as a starting point.
Who lives there
Şişli has a diverse expat population including a significant number of Arab expats, particularly in the Mecidiyeköy and Osmanbey areas. Remote workers, new arrivals, and people who work in the broader European business corridor are well represented. The Turkish population is mixed across income levels and backgrounds, making it one of the more socially diverse neighborhoods on the European side.
Best streets and areas within it
The streets between Şişli proper and Nişantaşı, particularly around Halaskargazi Caddesi, offer the best combination of character and value. The Osmanbey area, directly adjacent to Nişantaşı, shares some of that neighborhood's quality at lower prices. Avoid the streets immediately around the Mecidiyeköy junction if you want any sense of calm. The Fulya neighborhood within Şişli is quiet and residential with good transport connections.
